새로운 박물관은 다양한 기능을 수행한다. 진주 지역 공동체를 위한 열린 시설이면서 동시에 동아시아의 역사, 문화, 전쟁 외교사를 망라하는 국립박물관의 위상을 가진다. 현재의 진주박물관은 진주성 내에 위치해 전시품의 증가와 공공 프로그램의 확대에 따른 확장을 계획할 수 없으며 설비의 노후화로 인해 이전이 결정되었다.
우리의 설계안은 진주성과의 형태적, 재료적, 유형학적인 대화를 제안한다. 세 개의 볼륨으로 이루어진 건물은 한국 전통 성곽의 옹성 Barbican의 재해석이다. 옹성은 성문을 보호하기 위해 외부로 덧댄 성벽으로 동선의 흐름을 지연시키고 독특한 공간감의 외부공간을 형성하는 시설이다. 각각의 볼륨은 광장/ 상설전시, 어린이 박물관, 특별전시 등 주요 프로그램을 수용한다.
The new museum is an institution that will operate at multiple scales, both as an accessible local resource for the community of Jinju, and as a national museum of history, culture, and war diplomacy history of East Asia. The current Jinju National Museum is located within the Jinjuseong fortress, a designated national historic site. As such, the museum cannot enlarge its existing building, which requires updated facilities for the safety of the historic collection and expanded public programming as a community cultural center.
Our proposal creates a dialogue with the historic Jinjuseong Fortress formally, materially, and typologically. The three-part volume is an aggregation of Korean defensive Barbicans - fortified gateways that control access to historic walled cities. Each volume contains one of three primary programs: The Plaza/ Permanent Collection, the Children’s Museum, and the Special Exhibition Hall.
